Japanese Carp Kite Motif Matcha Bowl

This festive blue, red and green carp kite motif Matcha bowl (aka. "Chawan" in Japanese) has been masterfully hand-crafted by a renowned, Kyo-Yaki style (Kyoto Style Pottery) Japanese ceramic artist, Kohgiku Yamaoka.

Carp kites (aka. "Koinobori" in Japanese) are traditionally flown in Japan to celebrate Children's day, a designated national holiday that falls on the 5th May. From April to early May, landscapes across Japan are decorated with koinobori, wishing children for a good, bright future and hoping that they will grow up healthy and strong.

KOHGIKU YAMAOKA

Kohgiku Yamaoka was born in 1942. He worked under Zenjiroh Ueyama for 10 years, and then opened his own kiln in 1969. He excels at bright and vivid works. Ninsei Nonomura was an artist who developed Kyo-Yaki style in the early 17th century. He was best known for his definitive pottery wheel technique and printing on Kyo-Yaki. Kenzan Ogata (1663-1743) was one of the first to paint four seasons flowers on pottery in Japan.
