Natural Ash Glaze Si Ting Pear Teapot

Tea Repertoire

ASH GLAZE refers to a type of ceramic glazes made from the ash of various kinds of wood or straw. ASH GLAZE has been discovered around 1500 BC in China during the Shang Dynasty, by accident as ash from burnt wood in the kiln landed on pots. As Chinese realised that the ash was causing glaze, they developed a technique of adding the ash as a glaze before the pot was placed in the kiln. ASH GLAZE is the first glaze used in East Asia and it played a critical role in the development of the Chinese, Korean and Japanese pottery.

In contrast to the conventional ASH GLAZE which mixes ash with water and clay and apply as a paste on the earthenware before kiln-firing, our NATURAL ASH GLAZE SI TING PEAR TEAPOT has been created by allowing the natural ash the during the firing in the kiln to fall on the teapot. As it is more challenging to achieve the desired outcome from naturally occurring ash during firing, NATURAL ASH GLAZE requires more skills and experience from the artist.

Hand-crafted by Mr. Zhang Yunzeng, an official Henan Ceramic Art Master leading Yunzeng Kiln and an inheritor of intangible cultural heritage in Henan Province, China, our simple yet elegant NATURAL ASH GLAZE SI TING PEAR TEAPOT is an exquisite piece of art that will be very much appreciated by tea connoisseurs and fine ceramic collectors.
