  • Aroma: Fruity (apple), floral (gardenia) and baked notes.
  • Flavour: Fruity (apple, guava, quince), sweet floral (jasmine, gardenia) notes on baked background.
  • Mouthfeel: Delightful, complex liquor with a velvety mouthfeel. Slightly shorter finish than other dancong oolongs made from 100+ aged trees.

Our Phoenix Yellow Gardenia Dancong Oolong Tea is made from tea leaves of approximately 50 years old, wild tea shrubs, which have been meticulously hand-rolled and lightly charcoal roasted multiple times over a month. The result is a complex infusion that illustrates delightful, fruity (apple, guava) flavours on the fore and aromatic floral (jasmine, gardenia) notes on the background. The liquor also exhibits a great balance between delicate acidity and sweetness.

    Tips for Tea Connoisseurs

"Dancong", translated into "single shrub" or "single bush" in Chinese, refers to an individual tea plant cultivated from a variety of Shui Xian cultivar. As the sub-varietals of Shui Xian cultivars grown on the region have very different characteristics in terms of leaf and tree shape, teas made from different individual shrubs happened to develop very distinctive aroma and flavour profile from one to the other, which explains why the oolong teas produced in the region are called as "Dancong Oolong". However, as the amount of tea leaves that one tree can yield is very small, most dancong oolong teas nowadays are produced by using the tea leaves of trees of the same sub-variety of Shui-Xian cultivar.

Phoenix Yellow Gardenia is a famous Dancong oolong tea from Phoenix Mountain, Guangdong Province, China. Also known as "Huang Zhi Xiang" in Mandarin Chinese, which literally means "Yellow Gardenia Flower Aroma", this tea has got its name, due to its distinctive floral aroma evocative of yellow gardenia.

In China, Guangdong Province is the celebrated region for highly fragrant and aromatic Dancong oolong teas. In particular, Phoenix village in Chaoan county and Lingtou village in Yaoping county are the two renowned regions and our Phoenix Yellow Gardenia comes from Phoenix village.
