Tips for Tea Connoisseurs

Jiri Mountain Spring Joongjak (also spelled as Jungjak) is a Korean Green Tea, made from tea leaves of wild tea bushes naturally grown in Hwagae village on the slopes of Jiri Mountain, Hadong, South Korea. After receiving so much appreciation and compliments from our customers for our top quality, hand-picked, hand-made, Korean teas, we've now decided to extend our Korean tea offerings in our tea selection.

In comparison to our Korean green teas coming from Ackyang village such as Woojeon Spring Waltz Hadong Ackyang, Sejak Tendresse (Great Taste 3 Star Winner), Wild Arbor Joongjak (Great Taste 1 Star Winner), teas originating from Hwagae village are toastier with more pronounced nutty, chestnut flavour.

When brewed, Jiri Mountain Spring Joongjak offers a delicious, full-bodied liquor with umami, toasted, nutty flavours with a subtle hint of marine and herbaceous notes, which evokes nutty Dragon Well Long Jing green tea on one hand and herbaceous, vegetal, marine, under-toned Asamushi Sencha on the other hand. There is a slight hint of citrusy-herbaceous note in the finish, which leaves a refreshing sensation on the palate.

In South Korea, there are three main tea producing regions - Boseong, Hadong and Jeju Island. The history of Hadong tea dates back to 9th century and it is well-known as King's tea in South Korea, as artisan, handmade spring green tea from Hadong has been always offered as a local delicacy to kings in the past.

Small scale family tea gardens around Hadong area still continue to produce top quality, traditional, artisanal green, black and fermented teas from wild tea bushes naturally grown in the region. While you may often encounter Korean green teas from Boseong and Jeju Island, authentic, wild-bush, hand-picked, hand-made, green tea from Hadong is extremely rare in the markets outside South Korea due to the limited production. Our Korean green teas offer an exceptional opportunity to tea connoisseurs and tea enthusiasts to try authentic South Korean green tea from Hadong.

Korean green tea is graded according to the date of harvest and the maturity of buds and leaves: Woojeon/Ujeon (First Pluck), Sejak (Second Pluck), Joongjak/Jungjak (Third Pluck) and Daejak (Fourth Pluck). Each grade comes up with their unique flavour and Joongjak green tea, made from one tender bud and two fully opened leaves of early May offers a more nuanced nuttiness and herbaceous note than Woojeon and Sejak green tea. Although Woojeon is the very first-flush, best grade of Korean green teas, many tea connoisseurs also highly appreciate Sejak and Joongjak due to their more pronounced flavour and good price/quality ratio.

As with all the green teas, our Jiri Mountain Spring Joongjak is a rich source of vitamin C, catechin and amino acids. There are several studies indicating potential health benefits of green tea such as promoting skin health, weight loss, heart health and cancer prevention.
