Hojicha Loose Green Tea

Tips for Tea Connoisseurs

Hojicha is a unique, roasted green tea from Japan. Usually made from bancha (a summer flush tea after the the first and second harvest of Sencha), Hojicha processing was invented in Kyoto in the 1920s by tea merchants who began roasting inadvertently harvested stems and stalks over charcoal in order to avoid wasting them, as charcoal roasting was believed to bring more desirable flavour. Nowadays hojicha is roasted in a spinning roasting drum, which is commonly used for coffee roasting.

Our Hojicha is made from stems of Sencha green tea, made from Yabukita cultivars grown on the hills around Uji, Kyoto in Japan, which is well-known for its ideal terroir for tea cultivation and reputed to produce the best quality green teas throughout the whole Japanese archipelago.

The tea leaves were then expertly roasted in a controlled temperature to bring out delicious toasty and nutty flavours with a hint of coffee beans and caramel. The liquor is very warm, smooth and comforting without any presence of astringency. Offering a luscious liquor with low tannin, our Hojicha pairs really well with sushi, as high tannin and astringency usually clash with fishy taste, as is the case of red wine pairing with fish.

As roasting reduces the caffeine content in tea, our Hojicha makes a great choice as a low-caffeine alternative in the evening. Hojicha also makes a wonderfully refreshing iced tea that can be enjoyed after a workout session.

Naturally grown without pesticide and chemical fertilizer.
